id Software community map pack competition entries
I have been developing 2 levels for the id Software Community map pack competition. These new maps are: dk_idcomp (A Final Roll of The Dice) and dk_idcomp2 (Deep Impact).
Successful entries will be included in the future Q4 1.4 point release. The conditions of entry stipulate that maps must support team game or tourney mode game types. The biggest limiting factor is the prohibition of any custom assets. Designing a level with an original theme whilst utilising only standard Q4 assets is an interesting proposition. Never-the-less, as I have in the past been fairly vociferous about the lack of official support for modders and in particular mappers, I felt obligated to take up this challenge.
Many many thanks to the admin and mods at Astrocreeps's Map Center, for beta testing and providing a server. Without the support of similar like minded individuals reaching the point I have would have been impossible. It was my intention to develop levels for this competition that are both playable, and have an artistic integrity.
The images below are taken from 'A Final Roll of The Dice'.
A geo-comp style atrium map for TDM or tourney modes. The original idea was to
emphasise the importance of geometry, brushwork and good construction technique
in a Q4 map over a the heavy dependance on texturing that is so often seen.
Whilst sticking to this brief it was important that the resulting level remained
enjoyable and competitive to play. Whilst not a typical Q4 map, given the
limitations of the id Software community map pack competition (ie no custom
content), the level achieves its aims.

The next group of images are taken from 'Deep Impact'. The map is
designed specifically for tourney mode, but TDM and straight DM play is also supported. This level makes use
of the recently release Q1 style gothic textures. By far the majority of Q4 maps
are tech or base in style. Although limiting the map to only standard Q4
materials and assets could have resulted in a lack of options for a gothic
styled level, use of architecture and decal textures meant that the map appears
to have a much wider variation in texturing than it really has. Although a
fairly small level, this entry has a classic look and layout.
